Quickbooks and similar low end accounting packages are the most common for small business. However, there are hundreds and hundreds of accounting software packages out there for small business to large corporations. Some are designed for specific types of industries. The primary thing is that you understand the underlying concepts and many of them are similar in nature if you look at it from an accounting perspective. If you want to take it a step further, check into one of those 2-3 day certification classes for common software. Also, a big plus is knowing Excel (most common spreadsheet program), an extremely common tool for us accountants. Good luck!

I'd recommend quicken. I'm not sure if it does multi-currency, but it does do payroll. It's a great accounting program.

Why not check what is available specifically in your industry? Quickbooks is easy, user-friendly and popular, but it is not the right solution for a lot of businesses, because they need more than what it does. Define what your needs are first, then see what software will best fit them.
