QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q #1: Ravenloft in 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons?

I know 2nd edition had official rules in the Ravenloft supplements for making a dhampir( a half vampire). I have bought the first 4 Ravenloft books that came out for the d20 system and none of them have rules for 3rd edition dhampirs. Can anyone tell if i overlooked them of if an official dhampir race even exists for d20 system and where to find said reference material. Thanks!

The Answer your looking for is on Page 106-107 of the book Libris Motris (an undead splat book) There are also a few diffrent Vampire Templates in Dragon Magazine 348 As well as templates you can add ot existing vampires in the Libris Mortis pages 168 - 170

Q #2: Is there any online site where I can view the contents of the D&D 3rd

I've heard rumors that there is a site(s) where I can view the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide. If you know that this is true, and know where, please provide links to the site. I would also be interested if I can view the 2nd Edition of each book. Note: I'm not interested in downloading it; just viewing it. Thank you. P.S. If there is a site(s) where I can view the 2nd Edition of Mutants & Masterminds, please let me know about that as well. Thank you again.

There are quite a few places that have the System Reference Document posted. The SRD is a stripped down version of the PHB, DMG and Monster Manual focusing on rules. The sites I know are all currently using the 3.5 edition rather than the 3rd edition. The best organized, simplest to use site (IMHO) is www.d20srd.org Sadly, the M&M game is mostly not open content and thus not posted to the internet (at least not legally) as far as I know.

Q #3: Where can I find a really good selection of monsters for D&D 3rd Editi

Currently, I am using the SRD for Dungeons and Dragons. However, I am looking for other FREE online sites that have a wide variety of monsters for D&D 3rd edition (complete with stats, descriptions, etc.) Also, as a bonus, if you can tell me where I can find information on how to create a monster from scratch, FREE generators for complete monster creation, and information for creating traps, that would be very helpful as well. Thank you!

The Wizards of the Coast site contains tons of monsters, feats, classes and adventures. Just do a search and you're bound to find something. Also, the forums contain lots of people who have made their own monsters, and they post them frequently to get feedback.

Q #4: Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition?

Is there really a need for the 4th edition? I've been playing for 20 years, and I can see no reason for it. 3rd ed was needed to bring a new generation into the mix. I was very reluctant for this change, but I realize it was nessassary. I cannot see the need for the 4th. Other than to make WOTC more money. What do you guys think?

Best Answer

I've played for almost 30 years now, not just D&D but plenty of other RPG's as well. Need is a slippery thing when it comes to new editions of a game. But there are some problems that 4th edition is intended to address. First is the growing complexity of 3.5. The game has grown to the point where just keeping up with the official feats Wizards has published, let alone 3rd party and homebrew ones is darn near a full time job, let's not even talk about spells, prestige classes, magic items, etc. This tends to scare away potential new players, ie the people WOTC needs to make money so they can continue to have jobs. Second is the issue of play balance. D&D has always been a spellcaster dominated game past the first few levels of play. Some see this as a good thing. Others wonder, how can we change this to make melee characters viable? This is the biggest single change in the new edition, a total philosophical transmutation that people will either love or hate. Many will complain that it just doesn't feel like D&D any more. In a way, they're right, this isn't the D&D we grew up with. Does that make it bad and unneccessary? Not at all. Finally, yes it's about money. A game always reaches a point where new product becomes so specialized or odd or difficult to understand any need for that it's sales decline. Not only does Races of Fungi not attract new players, it doesn't sell well to the established customers either. If a game isn't selling, sooner or later, designers are out of a job. The people at WOTC (and Hasbro) need to eat too. Just because something has a money motive isn't a reason to scorn it, D&D as we know it wouldn't exist at all if Gary Gygax (RIP) hadn't thought he could make a buck from it. I've preordered my 4th edition core books already. I'm also scanning the internet looking for deals on 3.5 books I don't have yet as people unload them. I expect to be playing 3.5 for a good while yet, I'm in several campaigns that should run for years yet without converting, but I'm also betting I'll be in a 4th edition game by June 10th at the latest.

Q #5: A question for dungeons and dragons dorks?

I would love to get back into the game I loved, 3rd edition, With my kick ass necromancer, Ralishev. Anyone know anyone who runs a good game in the NJ area? Rali is not totally a good guy which causes problems with alot of parties.

As I don't live in New Jersey, I can't recommend any specific groups, but I can give some general guidelines. First, if you have any local gaming stores or comic shops, you'll usually find a bulletin board where people advertise for players or players advertise for games. Browse them, and see if there are any GM's looking for new blood; if not, put up a sign letting people know you're looking for a group. Don't be afraid to say what kind of game you're looking for: someone interested in, say, his character's moral struggle as he inexorably gives in to his dark side is not going to have much fun in a group of hack-n-slashers, and vice versa. If you don't have any local gaming stores (poor you!), you can try this at the local library and/or bookstore as well (for preference, try the secondhand bookstores, the ones that always have at least one cat or dog hanging around the place and the owner knows most of the customers by name. Actually, ask the owner - he or she probably knows who buys the gaming books, and can hook you up.) If that doesn't work, try a college campus. Most colleges have at least one gaming club (although some disguise them as anime clubs or sci-fi/fantasy clubs - trust me, it's the same thing, and even if it isn't, most of the members will belong to both.) Don't worry if you're not a student; I doubt anyone will care. Related to that - most D&D dorks will also geek out about other things. So if you can find something related, you can probably find a game. Example: both the Camarilla and One World By Night focus primarily on World of Darkness LARP. Which is not what you're looking for. But if you can find chapters of either group in your area (and I'm pretty sure you can), I'll bet you some of the players either run or know someone who runs D&D. There's also (and i'm smacking myself for not remembering this until now) the RPGA. Look them up; they can be a great resource, sort of a world-wide organization for D&D. In my experience, most GM's will have less problem with you playing a non-good character (some will, but most groups can roll with it) than they will with you playing an already-established character. Not knowing who ran the last game you played in, or how strict/lenient your GM was, a new group will probably subject your sheet to some scrutiny, and may ask you to change some things. I'm sure you know this already, but the less specific you are in what you're looking for, the easier it'll be to find. Looking for an rpg? No problem. Looking for Dungeons and Dragons? Still pretty easy, although there's a lot of other (arguably better) games out there. Looking for a specifically 3rd ed. game that'll let you run this one specific character? Not impossible, but it will take longer to find, probably. And RIP Gary Gygax.

Q #6: Dungeons and Dragons?

My boyfriend plays dungeons and dragons with his friends, and for his birthday i want to buy him the book he needs, i asked one of his friends and they said buy him the 3rd edition, i don't know what that means. i don't but the wrong book so where should i go to find the right one, and what is the right one to buy. thanks

Best Answer

Just walk up to a bookseller at B&N or whereever you go and tell them you need the D&D 3rd edition book. They will know what you mean. I dated a D&D addict for years, I put my trust in the people at B&N and they never let me down : )
