They say that if your young you should buy and hold some index funds becasue the market averages a return of 12% per year. None of the articles I read say anything about leveraged index funds. You know, the funds that return twice the index. So if we can expect 12% per year from an index fund that follows the SP500, then we could expect 24% from the ulta index fund that returns double waht the SP does. It sounds twice as good. Am I missing something? I have never read any article reccommending these things? Im taking about long term investing. richard, Im not talking about etfs, Im talking about index funds. Even if I was talking about etfs, buying on margin is not the way to do it because there are etfs that double the returns of the indexes.

Actually, your assumption is incorrect...the Pro Funds try to double the index daily, which can be vastly different (because of compounding -- positive or negative) from the yearly index return. Actually, Pro Funds offers both open end mutual funds and ETFs that are similar. I ran a simulation recently with this strategy using actual daily S&P index data, and found that you really need to be willing to stick it out for a long time (through HUGE declines) in order for this to pay off. That being said, it is probably a good strategy for a 20+ time horizon. Here are a couple factoids my simulation uncovered: 1) since 1980, the only investment dates that would yield you a negative return to present are between March '98 and June '01 2) if you invested in March of 2000, you would still be down over 25%. One other thing to consider is the impact of Pro Funds (relatively) high fees.

the first two answers are incorrect answer number one notes the fact that the RI value is wavelength dependant but neglects the fact that it is also temperature dependant and answer number 2 is wrong because it doesn't take in consideration the relationship between RI and Temperature. which is the fact that indexes of refraction and temparture are inversly proportional to one another which means when one goes up the other goes down and vice versa. That is why one must make adjustmments to the RI number when they get it if it wasn't taken at about 20C therefore, letter D should be correct

why do high schools offer accounting? what careers can you get if you have accounting?

I have a Master's in Business Admin, concentrating in Acctg/ Finance and have worked in this arena for over 12 years. Most high schools might offer an entry basic "Accounting 101" type course, but to get any type of real experience or knowledge, you'll have to take college level courses either at a 2 year community college or a 4 year university. There are an infinite number of careers/jobs you can have if you major or specialize your studies around Accounting. Any industry, whether it be entertainment, insurance, industrial, etc...ALL need accountants. Accountants are almost as needed as doctors. You will never be out of a job if you study accounting.
