QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question #1: Deductible Work Week Commute Business Travel?

I travel 720 miles roundtrip (I rent a room and sleep in it weeknights only) every week for my job, while maintaining my old residence, relationships, etc.. on the weekends. Can I deduct this mileage as a business expense?

Best Answer

In general, if you are on a temporary work assignment, you can deduct your mileage, food, and lodging on form 2106 which will carry over to your Schedule A. By "temporary", I mean that the job has lasted less than a year and it is not expected to last more than a year in total. As soon as the job is expected to last more than one year, or as soon as it does last more than one year, it is no longer considered a deductible expense.

Question #2: business week poll...US troops oppose bush it appears. what do you thi

President Bush's war in Iraq faces growing opposition from those who are on the front lines: soldiers, their families and veterans, including high-ranking officers. A bipartisan poll published by Business Week in December showed approval for the president at a mere 36 percent among soldiers, their families and veterans. "I think the American people were conned into this [war]," said retired Marine Corps Gen. Anthony Zinni, a Bush supporter in 2000. Zinni, who was chief of U.S. operations in the Middle East until three years ago, also charged the administration with failing to plan an occupation that would rebuild Iraq, provide internal stability and advance democracy.

Best Answer

Zinni is right. Iraq was a lie built on a lie. Bush wanted that war and got it.

Question #3: Why do furniture stores threaten to go out of business every week?

It seems like there is always a furniture store TV commercial about how they are going out of business and they are discounting everything in the store. Are furniture stores THAT despirate to tell us the same lie week after week?

Best Answer

There's a woman here in Columbus, Ohio who advertised that her furniture store was going out of business for like 40 years, then she would announce that the going out of business sale was so successful that they were going to extend the sale. And occasionally she would throw in a "grand reopening" sale. I don't know if she ever had the store closed for as much as a day. People respond to a sale so the pattern for many retail businesses is that they have one continuous "sale" and their "regular" prices are just fictional. Last year I saw stores that had Christmas decorations in August and they were advertised as "40% off" which begs the question "40% off what, 40% off how much they cost when they weren't being sold?". As a consumer you have to ignore the sales and focus on what you are getting, how much it costs, and how much you would pay for it elsewhere. My wife has a couple friends who are shop-a-holics. They are in the malls almost every day and are always telling about buying things they didn't need because of the great sale. What they don't understand is that if the store says something is worth $100 but is selling it for $40 they are not "saving" $60, they are SPENDING $40. You can't "save" money by buying things you don't need.

Question #4: When is National Small Business Week 2006?

The President of the US proclaims Small Business Week every year. When will it be held in 2006? April 12-13 isn't a week. I'm not sure the information referenced in the first answer is the same thing as "National Small Business Week."

Best Answer

April 12-13 http://www.sba.gov/sbw/

Question #5: I want to start my own business on the week-ends.Anyone have experienc

I would like to start my own business, not sure what yet. However, I have a great management/sales/customer service background. I would like to start out the business on week-ends and see how the profit and customer base stacks up. What is a good profitable week-end business for a woman with no or low investment and is not a scam? Are there any women out there who started like this and are now booming in profit and customer base?
