Single woman and I would like to start my own business, dont know what yet, not necessarily a home based. Have around $40,000 (AUS) to start up with. Something with low overheads, not involving food. Thinking of laundrymats,a giftbasket shop,or perhaps a games arcade for the kids loose on the streets to hang out at. but would love some other ideas to play with. Small and simple but what would be a wanted business in every community.

I will start answering your question with a question. Do you like working with and helping people, especially your relatives and friends? If the answer is yes then I have a suggestion for you. The business I am thinking about is home based and although it has only recently opened in Australia, the company behind it has been in business for over 14 years. It opened Australia and more recently New Zealand as a stepping stone to the far east countries and at present is in 17 other countries covering Europe and N America. You ask for small and simple, well simple it is but it could grow to a size where you would consider yourself to be completely financially free. I live in a small town, and i own this little empty shop. Does anyone have any ideas of a business I could start? Not involving food.

The first thing you must do is realize that an empty building or shop is just that, space. You live in a small town so what is the population? What service or entity is your town lacking? What do the people in your town who will be your customers feel the town needs? You could open any business and have it fail because you are not meeting a need in your community it's as simple as that. As for arriving at ideas for a business this is not the form for you to discover your business. Do some research in your community, look at the complete trading area the demographics and your target market. People will support what the community needs, not just a business to fill a vacant space. Peace

i want to be self employed, and i am very short in cash, can anyone suggest any small business ideas, something very small me and my younger brother can manage for now and grow as we go. any ideas will be welcomed.

Small Business Ideas? My mom and i want to start a business and we cant think of anything.we live on 5 acres and have a barn with 5 stalls all are taken up by our animals. One stall will be free by the time we sell my mare. we probaly would like to do something with animals i thought about getting a miniature horse stallion and a few mares but my mom i dont think wants to do that. Can you give me some ideas anything is fine doesnt have to be animal related. Thanks

I personally would not get involved with breeding, esp. mini horses, usually you will end up loseing money with breeding. It costs around 5,000 dollars to breed and care for a mare while she is in foal until the foal is a weanling, rarely will you be able to sell the foal for over the cost it requires to breed. Where I am from it is impossible to sell mini horses, you can maybe get a couple hundred dollars for one. I feel like breeding mini horses is somewhat wrong, there are all ready too many of them, and they don't really have much purpose other then companion animals. Keep in mind, breeding isn't easy, mini horses have all sorts of health and genetic problems due to their size, in order to be a responsible breeder you need to be very knowledgeable so you do not breed unhealthy horses. You could try doing something like having a pony party buisness, get a couple small quiet ponies/horses and take them to children's birthday parties. You could also have a small petting farm with pony rides, and host children's birthday parties, or have a day care/summer camp/babysitting program at your place. My mom and I have a business making western show clothes, it has become pretty successful. We also sell horse show jewelry and accessories.

I have about 40k saved I might be able to get another 10k from friends and family. I might be able to get a small business loan ... probably not but maybe. Any one have any small business ideas that wouldn't cost much more then 40 or 50k?

open a fast food restaurant.. if you open a small business for services, you can keep all your costs under 20k...like travel agency, job agency...etc You basically just pay for the rent & ads
