Question #1: Have the wheels come off of the immigration reform effort?
|
|
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/
4635621.html
"WASHINGTON ? The wheels have come off the bipartisan House-Senate campaign to craft a sweeping overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, with key players splintering into different directions.
The Senate's lead immigration champion, Massachusetts Democrat Ted Kennedy, is moving in one direction; his House allies in another; and the White House is operating on a third track with Senate Republicans.
As late as last week, business, labor, religious and immigrant rights groups unified in the push for a legalization bill were still pinning their hopes on the four-party talks held by Kennedy, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Reps. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., and Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.
Earlier this week, Kennedy and McCain shelved their work after they were unable to strike a compromise on organized labor demands that would make a guest-worker program far less attractive to employers.
Instead, Kennedy announced that he'd offer up the bill that passed the Senate Judiciary Committee last year.
"In my view, the quickest way to get this done is to start where we left off," he said.
Though the measure Kennedy and McCain have been working on has been closely guarded, it tracks broadly with what the Judiciary Committee passed last year.
Both bills would place most illegal immigrants on a path to eventual citizenship; increase immigration enforcement; and create a guest-worker program.
But that 2006 bill was significantly amended before it passed the Senate ? only to founder amid bickering with the House.
Kennedy's decision to go back to the past isn't being emulated by Gutierrez and Flake, who instead will introduce a bill that enshrines much of their work with Kennedy and McCain.
The Bush administration, meanwhile, is working privately with Senate Republicans."
Since I've seen nothing I like yet, I'm laughing. What do you think?

There are plenty of laws on the books already. They just aren't enforcing them. The idea of immigration reform is really just a code word for AMNESTY. I had more to say, but it wasn't pretty.

Question #2: any business weekers?

i'm headed to washington business week (camp) tomorrow and i'm going to be deprived of sleep and fun... i also have to pack my stuff into my gay little suit case... i realize so far this isn't much of a question, so, will i be seeing you there?
Best Answer

Question #3: What else is there to do in Washington, DC?
|
|
I've been to Washington DC a couple of times and seen all the major monuments and museums. This week I am going there on a business trip and will have one free dayto look around. Can somebody recommend me some activities other than the above mentioned ones? It does not even have to be very educational or anything, just something interesting to see or do. Thanks!
PS - I will have a car to get around.

If you haven't been to the Spy Museum, you should go. First they teach you to spy, then you become a spy (yes, really), then they give you the history of spying. Very worth it. I'd also be surprised if you've been to the Korean War Memorial... that's behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Hard to find, well worth it, especially after dark. I'd also go paddling in the Potomac near the Jefferson Memorial, which is fun for an hour, and I'd take in a play at the Shakespeare Theatre, which is considered one of the three best Shakespearan theatres in the world. If they're sold out (happens most performances), then try Arena Stage or Source Theatre, which are all excellent. During the day, you can walk around Adams Morgan, but it's more exciting at night. Oh, and check out Kramer Books and Afterwards in Dupont Circle, a truly excellent bookstore, and nice neighborhood to walk around. You might walk through Dupont Circle, which is beautiful. Play timed chess with the homeless men, who will beat you at it and trash talk you, too.

Question #4: Where can I meet some 18-21 year old people in washington DC?
|
|
Hey,
I'm in Washington DC this week for business and I get this weekend off (Im 19), I was wondering where I could meet some young people to hang out... Is there a beach or anythin? Any clubs that younger peeps usually frequent on saturdays (ill have no trouble getting in)? Im in the Crystal city area right now.
Cheers
Best Answer
well... im right outside of crystal city in alexandria, as you probally already know METRO is the best way to get around town. There are no beaches.... but the waterfront down in DC is very nice, as in clubs most are 21 and up, but in Adams Morgan there are some that are 18+ im 19 and have no problem getting into some in A. Morgan, besides that there is really no 1 place where people hang out, depends on your interests. you can e-mail me @ jmsbdunks@yahoo.com for more info...

Question #5: Im going out of town for business next week to Washington DC ...?
|
|
What should I wear??? On Thursday, I will be a at a training from 9 to 4. And then in the evening, i will be going to "Phantom of the opera." What kind of attire should I wear to that? I work for a law firm and im the youngest (20) which means i dont really have a sense in whats appropriate to wear..Please help!!!
Best Answer
If I were you, I would try to combine a few pieces that were both functional and practical but stylish.
Working all day - you will want ease of movement. D.C. is humid this time of year with some unpredictable weather, so you'll want a short-sleeved blouse, (in case it gets warm/sticky and you need to cool off during lunch, you can easily slip your jacket off), some slacks and a light jacket with some mid-heeled pumps that are comfortable (9 West and Aerosoles make good ones).
For evening... going to "Phantom Of The Opera" - wear a nice long straight black skirt with some slingback pumps or classy mules and a pretty blouse with a jacket. Wear your hair back - it will look dressy/conservative, yet very 'theatre-classy' at the same time.
Have fun!
