Commercial Banking Career

I'm thinking about working in banking but I have a friend who's in investment management and that looks interesting as well. I've seen job ads at my school for HSBC commercial banking trainees and some for other big banks. It says that you have to be willing to relocate and fluency in languages is a plus. I think it could be interesting if I got a chance to improve my French but I wonder if they'd just send me somewhere else in the US? I like where I'm living so maybe it would be better to apply for a local bank? I'd probably just be a teller if I did that though.

from KHS the best answer banking is ofcourse a good career if you want to have a steady life. there is no creativity involved there. its a routine job HSBC is ofcourse good bank to work with. its better to work with big bank hence you can get good exposure.

The Government will give £4,000 to a failed asylum seeker to return home, retrain and set up a business. But when a low-waged indigenous British person wants to upskill to get a better job and cannot afford to pay the £2,000 course fees he gets no help at all from the Government and instead is directed towards thwe commercial High Street Banks (Career Development Loans) who will not help the financially excluded (which many low paid people are) or charge exorbitant interest rates for those they do approve. So the Government can GIVE £4,000 to someone who has come here illegally to enable them to get a "better life" at home. But when someone born here wants to train for a better life they get nothing, not even a loan, from them. How does this work exactly? Asylum Seekers do not come here illegally. They come under the UN Convention on Human Rights which the UK has signed up to and which entitles anyone who has a reasonable fear for his/her life to come here and claim asylum. They are therefore entitled to apply for asylum. If that asylum claim fails, they have to return to their own country. I don't know where you get the idea that every failed aslyum seeker gets £4k to go away - I think you have been reading the Daily Mail.

Hey all, I have a few interviews coming up for some entry level internships with a few banks (both commercial and investment in divisions such as Operations and Compliance). I am a senior in college. I was wondering what is a good answer that will score points with the interviewer to the "Why do you want to be in the banking industry?" question. My answer to this question would be that I like the corporate work environment, set work schedule, offers challenging work, and that the banking industry is something I want to learn more about as a career. Is this a good enough answer and does it sound genuine? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance!

You may also say that banking is your interest and this is also aligned to your career plans and educational background. Having this in mind, you intend to build a career in the banking industry.

I have accepted an offer with a commercial banking company for a summer internship that pays $15/hour. I would start with this company in May and work through August. I would really like to pursue an investment banking internship or a hedge fund internship (which I have lined up for next semester) for the summer. Either job would pay better and is more in line with what I'd like to do as a career. I'm starting to think that I have made a mistake in accepting the commercial banking offer. How bad would it be to withdraw my acceptance? What negative consequences, besides me feeling terrible, would occur? Also, everyone at the commercial banking company has been incredibly nice to me, and they have sent me a few gifts, for which I would probably send a check to cover the cost of if I withdrew.

It is bad only if you try to work there later in a real world job. I have seen interns turn down job offers only later to see them not even considered for permanent full time jobs. I would consider contacting them on their offer to see what those consequenses are. Sometimes there are no second chances and you need to evaluate your situation. Nothing says that you can't intern at another more suitable employer after your internship is up. You will be better off with both experiences.

I have master degree in finance and accounting, recently get a job offer as teller in a bank, is that a waste? is that any good opportunity to move to other department such as finance, or commercial banking? how long I have to stay in a teller position to move to higher level? What is career path for a teller? problem is that I have no strong work experience back up with me
