It's a zero-sum game, so someone is making money off all the people who lose. I don't invest in futures and gave up on options--just stocks and ETF's for me. Market Wizards is a good book to read about big winners in the futures markets. Several people talk about how they started small.

I have some friends in finacial planing and ehy have to chase people around for their money to invest with them. Do commodities traders do the same thing? do they chase people around to park their money with them and they trade on their behalf? How do they make money? I am quite new to this area but I have heard you can make a lot of money and also lose a lot of money. Do you have to study finance to go into that path or any degree will do as long as you know the right people? Can somebody alsogive me a webste where i can read some examples of how trading in comodities work? I am also looking for somebody to reccomend me a book on the subject.

The biggest problem with having a currency that is dependent on commodities is price volatility. When the price of oil goes up a lot, so does the value of the Canadian dollar. Sounds good right? But two weeks later Russia could announce that they found the largest oil reserves on Earth and that would drive down the price of oil, and with it the value of the Canadian dollar (or any other currency strongly tied to the price of oil.) There is a lack of stability when a currency depends on being able to find and produce a particular naturally occurring but naturally rare substance.

Check out AMAZON.COM and search for "Make Money in Stocks". There are a ton of new & used and very affordable books. Also, you can check in your area to see if there might be seminars on stock and commodity trading by searching for "(your city) stock seminar". I would try to gain as much knowledge as possible by reading and also recommend contacting a financial advisor for any large investments. Best of luck!
