QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question #1: Is a Business degree (MBA) essential to work in Corporate Business if

Let me be specific: I am a law student (business law) with an undergraduate double major in Sociology-Organizational Studies and Psychology (with a double minor in History and English). Since I would like to keep the option open to becoming a business man at later age, I was thinking of applying for a dual degree (JD/MBA). I hear, however, that once you have a background in business law, the MBA becomes unnecessary, for you already have the critical thinking skills and can pick up the skills on the job. The marketability of having 2 degrees is unimportant for me if I can save myself the time and money of going to school for an extra year.

Best Answer

It depends on the portfolio of your job. 1. If you are taking up a job in corporate which is only associated with law, then all you need to know is company laws. Your Law degree must be fine in that case. 2. If you are going for an executive post, or if you feel like switching over to management executive post later, then you would be required to have an MBA. 3. If you are going to start your own business, you need to be even a grduate, leave alone having an MBA! But yes, having an MBA is an added qualification for 1 & 3 above, and essential for 2. Given your splendid varying academic background, I would suggest you to do MBA. You could have an edge over managers who know only management, and lawyers who know only law.

Question #2: Distance Degree PHD in Business Law or Similar Program?

I am in search of a PhD from a state or regionally accredited (foreign or US) institution (course or research) that I can complete through distance education. The area I would like to study is: Business Law, Ethics or Corporate Leadership or something similar.

Best Answer

PhD are programs. Those three subjects don't have PhD programs in the US. I highly doubt there would be a PhD program for any of those anywhere in the world. The subjects you picked tend to be individual subjects taken as one class in either a law program or a business program. A law degree in the US is technically a doctorate. An MBA is just a masters. I'm not sure why you're looking for a PhD program unless you want to call yourself "doctor". You may find a correspondence law degree course in another country such as Hong Kong, but it will likely be a general law degree in which you can take a course such as business law.

Question #3: i would like to study a combined course of corporate finance and busin

Best Answer

Many of the top universities allow you to get a combined JD/MBA. It is usually a four year program. Typically, students do their first year completely in the business school, their second year completely in the law school. In their third and fourth year, they take most of their classes in the law school and a few in the business school.

Question #4: Corporate Law, is it really that miserable?

I am a student in business school who is thinking of going to law school. I have read blogs and a lot of people say that while corporate law is lucrative, it leads one to misery. Is it really so bad? Are there other areas of law that are more interesting or lead one to happiness?

Best Answer

I'm a lawyer...If you are thinking of law school, go ahead and apply. Don't decide which area of practice you want to go into until you have some contact with all of these areas. Law school will help you understand what is involved in each of these areas. To answer your question, corporate law is not miserable in and of itself. It really depends on what motivates you and where your interests lie. Actually, being a family law attorney or criminal law attorney can be much worse...it really depends on your point of view. If you have a family practice, you will deal with people that are always in a terrible situation...divorce, death, etc. Criminal law can leave you dealing with the worst segment of society. In corporate law, it is much drier work...not as much emotion, but more details and financial dealings. Some of it can be very mundane, much like a CPA's work, but it really depends on what you like. Some people love details and seeing to every tiny detail...others love the emotion and passion that are involved in trial law. Even if you don't like any of it, a law degree can be one of the most useful degrees you can earn. You can do almost anything with the education that you will recieve.

Question #5: i would like to study a combined course of corporate finance and busin

Best Answer

Go to school, then college, then university and don't forget to study or you won't pass. Strange that?
