I am a new business student taking my first finance course and I need to purchase a financial calculator. What product would be best for a beginner?

Rather than choosing what's best for a beginner, go for what's an industry standard: HP 12C You'll have to learn a new notation (Reverse Polish Notation), but it's fairly easy to pick up. If you wanted to calculate 2+2 for example, rather than typing "2" "+" "2" "Enter", you type "2" "Enter" "2" "+". This calculator is so good that it is one of only two calculators allowed on the CFA exam as well as other financial certification exams.

I need to caculate interest and differnt payments monthly for the past 3 years. I need a caculator for this?

Hi, I just bought the BA II PLUS financial calculator for my financial management class and I dont really understand the user manual. So for example, a collectionnor buy a painting for 2 million dollars and he think that in 5 years, he can sell it 4 million, How do I find the discount rate with the calculator? I know How to find it when I write it down but I'm searching a quicker way with the calculator... Thank you for your help! I tried as you said but it gave me a error message (Error 5) ???

A better way to state you Question is: What is the rate of appreciation (i/Yr) for a painting that is purchased today for $2M (PV) and sold 5yrs from now (n=60) for $5M (FV)... there being no additional outlays during the coming 5yrs (PMT = zero). Input the above and Press the (i/Yr) button to get the answer of 18.466% per yr.

I just bought an hp17bll+ financial calculator and I can't figure out how to convert a decimal such as 0.33 into fraction as such 1/3. If anybody out there has this calculator and knows how this is done, I would really apreciate the help.

I own a Texas Instruments BA II Plus financial calculator. DO I always have to enter the Present Value (PV) as a negative amount? does that apply for any financial calculator?

Yes, you do have to put the negative. Sometimes it seems odd, but here is an example that makes more sence. Situation: You borrow $50,000 at 8% per year, you agree to make payments of 6000 every year. How long will it take to pay off the loan? On your calc it would look like this: N = ? I% = 8 PV = -50,000 (You are in the hole 50,000 remember, so its negative) PMT = 6000 FV = 0 (at the end you want to owe nothing) Solve for N, you will get a period of 14.27 years. Hope that helps

Hello all and thanks in advance for any help. I am using a HP10BII financial calculator. I know how to calculate bond prices when given par, maturity time, coupon rate, and YTM. However, I'm unsure of the key strokes required to determine YTM when given par, time to maturity, coupon rate, and payment. It seems like I'm missing a variable. Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

u use the coupon rate to obtain payment. so pmt = x pv = y fv = z n = n cpt i/y u'll get your YTM
