What really is "debt relief"? Think about it. The government is giving the big banks money that they might otherwise not get from the overloaded debtor nation. So, it's the G7 giving billions to their biggest banks. This takes the load off the corrupt 3rd world governments who will either (a) spend their money wisely now or (b) pocket the extra cash, run up more debts, and put themselves back in the same boat. Pick one. Nigeria???? It's one of the biggest oil producers in the world. The last thing it should need is more money shovelled at it. Maybe what the bankrupt nations of the world need is to go into receivership, and have some outside group come over and run their country for them. (I think that's called "colonialism"). Someone who's more interested in developing roads, electrical systems, phones, education, clean water- all the things needed for a country to get on its feet. Unless that's what the money is for, it's wasted either way.

I see all the time ads for debt relief, but they are for people who have serious debt problems (like in the 10s of thousands). i am about $2,500 in debt and live paycheck to paycheck. My credit sucks due to a divorce and some late payments. What can I do to get myself out of this hole?

you need to update your home page then.............anyways to your question...............this can be fixed but like everything else it will take a bit of time and hard work..............first of all when you get paid try to system of paying your self first.this is where you take a SMALL amount of your pay check and put it away.....then clear off your bills as best you can I would really recommend reading several books from the library, as well as looking at clarkhowards web site..............he also can / will deal with individual questions so you can state your own case. It is hard BUT you can do it...........we have just come out the other side of a nasty credit situation thanks to the ex wife and what you need to do is make sure that is put on your credit report at some place.............this will help explain as to why there was that slump / hiccup with your money Good luck

I just graduated school and racked up $8,000 in credit card debt. Luckily, I avoided the whole student loan mess, but I really need to get control over this lingering debts. I have heard good and bad things about debt relief companies. So i was just wondering is someone could direct me in finding a legit company. Also, any info on debt relief is much appreciated.

Debit relief companies do nothing for you that you cannot do yourself and you have to pay them to help. 1. Cut up the credit card. You obviously cannot handle having one yet. 2. Sit down and figure what you have coming in versus what goes out into your monthly bills. 3. Take the extra money you have and begin paying it on the credit card. 4. Consider a second job - part-time or full in which that money will be strictly used for paying off the credit card. You can also consider a personal loan from you bank (if you qualify) for what you owe on the CC. The personal loan percentage will be easier on you than the CC will be. Have the monthly payment pulled directly from your account and you can even save half-a-percent or more on the deal. But cut up the card. As long as it's active you will be tempted to charge on it when there is something you want and don't have the cash for. No cash - no purchase. Good luck.

file BK. Your credit is already bad. Get a clean slate today or its going to take forever to pay this debt if you live paycheck to paycheck. Filing BK will bad credit for 1 yr aslong as you open 1 or 2 small secure credit cards after. Its the easiest and fastest way to fix your problem.

i owe just over $12,000.00 in credit card debt, and at least 4,000 in medical. With some other bills that total over $2,000. Me and my wife make very little money, since i am not working due to surgery. Am i better off with a debt relief program or filing bankruptcy?

If you can't anticipate going back to work soon, then file for bankruptcy. If you DO anticipate returning to work soon, then I would seek debt relief instead. Some of those places advertised on TV (where they arrange lower payments and relief) may be useful, but I don't know anything about them. While you can list everything, you will likely continue to make payments on stuff such as your car if you want to keep it. I was never in arrears on my vehicle loan, so it wasn't an issue. I can also tell you from experience that filing bankruptcy does not destroy your credit. It may just be harder to get lower interest rates. Anyway, places started offering me all sorts of credit less than a year later, but it took 5 years to get the lower interest rates. Student loans, judgements and taxes cannot be eliminated through bankruptcy. You owe it until you are legally disabled or dead. Also, and very important, pick one national credit card you want to keep and pay that off! Don't include it in bankruptcy. Everybody needs at least one credit card for emergencies, even if it is just to get a hotel or car rental.
