I just turned 18 about 10 days ago, and I tried opening a checking account with bank of America, but received the following notification a few days later: "We are unable to open your account(s) at this time. Our decision was based in whole or in part on information obtained in a report from a consumer-reporting agency." I'm assuming this means that it wasn't opened because of information on my credit report. However, up until this point I haven't been able to sign up for anything that involves credit, so shouldn't I not really have a credit report? Considering that a checking account just involves me using money in my own account, I don't know why it would be turned down based on a lack of credit. Also, I tried checking my credit report online but every site requires a credit card number (even if the service is free), and I don't have a credit card because I was a minor until about a week or so ago. So I don't know how to check my credit report either. Any tips on either of these things?

Given your age, it's probably not that you have bad credit...its that you have NO credit. Try finding a smaller banking insititution to open your checking account...maybe start off with savings first, sometimes they come with a debit card for easier access. the best way to build credit is with a credit card....HOWEVER...I caution you...It's very easy to get in over your head. a good rule of thumb, never charge more than you can pay off that month. Every month you go where you pay your monthly bill on time improves your credit score. when you are late on a payment...it hurts you. (also, something I found out personally - if you have a credit card, and you go a long time without incuring a charge on it (don't use it) they will close the account, and that can also look bad on your score. Hope that helps. oh....sometimes you can apply at a store like sears, etc for a line of credit...aka credit card. that can also help your credit, though if you apply in too many places it will hurt.

I just got my credit report online and it isn't as good as I thought it would be! It is only 450, however I have not a single late payment on anything reported in there! I'm not sure if anyone can help explain this and even give me some tips on how to improve it. I have three credit payments, one on a car and two credit cards. One credit card has about a $100 balance left and the other around $20... If I pay these off and just keep them open will this help my numbers? One has been open for about a year, no late paymesnts. The other about 4 months. No late payments. My car loan has been open around 7 months, again, no lates. Do these have to be open a year to effect my credit number, or does time frame not really matter as much? I have about 8 hits on my report looking for credit. Several are from when I was looking for my first car and I got run through many creditors. The others where when I was trying to get my first credit card and to establish my credit. There are several things that effect your credit rating, however 3 main items impact your rating the most. 1. Available credit on open, revolving accounts (credit cards). 2. Payment history - no late payments is the best 3. Length of credit history The best things you can do is to keep your credit card balance as low as possible, additionally seek higher limits on your cards (be careful with this, you don't want to fall into the trap of higher limits = higher balance. Increasing your limit while keeping the same or lower balance increases your ratio of "available credit"). Some credit card companies won't increase your limit if you are not using the card or using most of your limit now. To do this, look at your monthly bills and see what you can pay on credit card. Make sure you are budgeting for them, then simply pay off that new balance each month. This will allow you to use more of the card regularly and more enticing for the credit card company to want to increase your limit. Second, do not close out your credit card accounts. Unless you are in trouble with the amount of debt on the card and seeking lower interest rates, keep your account open to establish a history. If you are doing the right things and not getting in over your head or making payments late, the best thing to do is keep doing it - every month counts and builds that history.
