I am a quite promising students and I have thought of majoring in economics as an undergraduate student (I haven't applied anywhere yet). I will probably apply to these six schools: Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, MIT. My question is, what's the best of these schools if consider only the economics undergraduate department?

All of the mentioned have top notch economics departments. You should also consider the University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, University of Minnesota, Northwestern, and Claremont McKenna as well. As far as the best place to go as an undergraduate, I'm not sure, but imagine yourself as a mathematics major and you should be fine.

Fantastic. I have a close friend who went there, then continued at NYU grad school for a PhD in Economics, and is now an Economist at the IMF (International Monetary Fund) in Washington DC. The CAS is a great school. The dean of students is fantastic. My son is there majoring in English. A million fascinating things happen at NYU and it is getting harder and harder to get in and it keeps going up in national rankings. A huge part of the NYU undergrad experience has to do with living in the absolute coolest spot on Earth. The housing department leaves much to be desired though.... But the kids don't seem to mind.

One would think that it would not be run out of the Agriculture and Life Science School. I have strong interests in business, but I?m not amazing at science. How could this affect admission?

Cornell was one of the original land grant colleges, funded by the Morril Act of 1861. Unlike the other early land grant colleges, Cornell established some of its programs under the state supported system and others on a private basis. This arrangement has lasted until this day. CALS is one of the state supported colleges. Applied economics, unlike pure economics, has been viewed as an appropriate program to be housed on the state supported side. Interestingly, the school of education is also in that college. Many students with an interest in business attend the applied economics program, but most will study economics or management in one of the private side colleges.

First -- congratulations. Getting into three UC schools is something to feel good about. All of the UC schools are highly rated. If you are interested in economics, the best of those three is UC-San Diego. While there are probably four or five economics departments in California that are better (i.e., Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Stanford) the fact is that there are probably 40 states in the US where UCSD would be the best in the state. It is an excellent department. UC-Davis is also very good. It would be a better choice for you if you are interested in Agricultural Economics -- but otherwise, UCSD dominates it.
