Home economics doesn't usually go by that name anymore. Typically the programs are referred to as human ecology, family and consumer sciences, human environmental sciences or some such name. I have seen the recently published ones with family time, behavior and adolescent rates. I have noticed that people who have taken at least two Home Ec courses in High school tend to eat better (more nutrionally sound) or were taught at home did better than the others who didn't. I wonder if anyone has ever done a study on this, and incorporate Home Economics (or "consumer" whatever they changed it to) into a standard of education so young adults do not have to rely on fast food, like Subway or McDonalds, to teach them nutrition. I took many in high school, and paid more attention to my health (plus my family influence). I'm not too concerned about obesity, as there are many factors involved, but general health status. For those who may be interested...Germany is working on this (HA, my grandmother is full german...and whom I learned all about frugal living!) I stongly doubt that there have been studies with those correlations. A big part could be that just because you take a home economics course doesn't make you a great cook. Likewise, if you don't take the course you may still be a decent cook. As I look back on my home ec course, there was no information about what was healthy. We cooked pancakes, deserts, and a meat (i think..)

Since I was in high school I wanted to be a family and consumer sciences teacher which is the fancy term for home economics teacher, but I feel that there isn't enough job availability. So I decided to do Biology teacher but my heart isn't in it. I'm engaged and my fiance is going off to medical school and I'm going to be the one supporting us which is why I want a secure job, buy lately my fiance has been telling me that he'd rather I do something I like than be miserable, but doing the home ec means me traveling further to go to school and stay behind after he leaves a little longer. Advice any one?

Are you sure these are the only two options? These days, many teachers are hired for their ability to teach more than one subject.
